INTRODUCTION
to A Place in Time:

"Time hasn't dimmed my memories
of our ranch on Petty Creek, Montana,
and it seems necessary to recount tales
of living there. I don't know why,
except that the country slides into focus
now as a place out of time and worthy
of mention in a foreign world that
developed around it."

A Place in Time is the true story of a rugged, adventuresome Wild West Cowboy who after a prolonged struggle lost out to progress.

For years Roger Longpre adapted and survived as a cowboy, rancher, logger, and elk hunt outfitter in the remote mountain region of Montana. But the Forest Service ended his career as an outfitter, the introduction of the truck to transport logs ended his work as a logger, and a corporation took over the ranch to make it a corporate retreat.

A Place In Time tells the story of a boy growing up with the Flathead Indians who lived a dream life until those dreams turned to nightmares. Roger’s life experiences are shared by no one and can be told only by someone who knows him well
– i.e., his wife Janice Longpre.

Here's what people are saying about A Place in Time:

  • “What a great read. Having spent many summer vacations in the Rocky Mountains, the story effortlessly brought me back to a time when growth did not go hand in hand with success. And reminded me that hard work and determination continue to sow their oats.” William Cushman, Des Moines, IA.

  • “Petty Creek flowed past the Longpre family's tiny log house and barn. Their handful of cattle wandered, mostly unseen, through the timber …. And so we hear Longpre's stories of working, playing, hunting and surviving - and ultimately of trying, desperately so, to hold onto that life as the world around him changed.”  Sherry Devlin, reviewer for The Missoulian

  • “This book stars one of the last of the real cowboys, who lived on the cusp between the old West and our world of today. How could he know, as he herded cattle, broke broncos, befriended nomadic Indians and led pack trains into the Montana high country that his way of life was passing away forever?” M. Campbell, amazon.com reviewer.
